Nothing better for woodsball May 30, 2010
By J. Higgins This is THE woodsball marker.
I haven't been out on a field with this yet, but I've messed around with it in the backyard just to test it out. This gun is beautiful. I have had the pleasure of firing a Tippmann 98 Custom, A5, X7 (with E-grip), and now this.
First off, the changes: - The included e-grip is much better then the add-on for the previous X7. First off, the marker is not solely based on battery power. When in semi-auto mode, the gun fires without battery usage. When you flip to full-auto mode, you go into the e-grip functions of the gun without having to use an allen wrench to click on the power on the grip like with previous e-grips. So you don't need to worry about the battery dying on you on the field.
- The flex valve has been completely changed (seemingly reversed) for a much smoother operation with easy access to velocity adjustment and no need to ever cock the gun.
- The gun is more compact then the previous X7 model.
- The smaller magazine is much much better then the previous X7 model. With the smaller design and the better spacing from the trigger, this eliminates the need for the shroud or a handle to hold onto the gun.
Second off, BUY THIS.
I tested the gun out with 500 paintballs in a matter of 15 minutes or so. The gun pumped out in semi auto, 3 burst, and full auto modes without a hitch. Not a single paintball burst and all the shots were very consistent in velocity and accuracy.
I 100% suggest purchasing Paintball BT Apex Tippmann A-5 A5 Adjustable Barrel to go with this gun. The A5, X7 and X7 Phenom all have the same barrel threading, so no need for extra barrels. The APEX is unmatched though and you will not regret the purchase.
One odd thing about the Phenom compared to the X7 is that the barrel shroud doesn't allow for custom barrels. If you want a custom barrel, you need to remove the shroud. This doesn't bother me at all, since I don't need the shroud (I don't believe much in accessories other then a decent barrel).
***UPDATE*** Upon taking this out for a weekend, I learned that the gun has a small air leak. I researched on the internet and found that a lot of the Phenom's have leaks in various places. The gist of it is that Tippmann is definitely working out the kinks in the factory line. A lot of people had luck by taking the gun apart, cleaning and regreasing the gun, and then tightening everything.
I wasn't that lucky and I found that my leak was coming from the gas line that runs through the handle. I called Tippmann service and they were very quick to help, sending me a replacement piece. When I put it in, the gun ran perfectly.
I will not change my review from 5 stars for this. All products, from electronics to clothing to paintball markers, have initial problems while the factories get used to producing them. The fact that Tippmann was so quick to fix my issue with no questions asked and no charge to me proves that they are a great company. After replacing the one part, the gun shot like a dream.
***UPDATE AUG 22 2010*** I'm dropping my review down to a 4 star... Possibly soon to be zero stars. The marker has a severe design flaw in the gas line. My replacement line has sprung a leak now in the same spot as my previous line. I searched the internet and there are tons of users reporting the same issue now.
The marker produces a pinhole leak that grows over time where two parts are soldered together on the gas line, right at the bottom of the marker's handle.
I'm calling Tippmann tomorrow to get another new gas line and I'm going to question if they've solved these problems. If I get another busted gas line then I plan to sell the marker and get an X7 with an e-grip instead of the Phenom.
I've only been able to produce around 4 hours of successful field game play with this marker so far without a leak. I've had to use borrowed markers for several games now due to the leaking issues. My teammates have now given me the nickname "leaky."
***UPDATE FEB 15 2010*** It appears that I just had a flawed marker from the start. I went through 4 gas lines and a shipment to Tippmann before specifically being contacted by their Research & Development team about my marker. They were very interested in finding out why I was having continued issues.
They noted that the initial gas lines were problematic and that they have contacted the factory that provides them and have worked out the flaw in the line. They had me send in my marker and air tank so that they could test everything in R&D to find any flaws with my marker specifically. Aside from a stripped screw, they couldn't find any problems with my marker, so they sent it back along with a couple spare gas lines so that I wouldn't have to wait for them to send me new ones in case they leaked again.
Anyway, I took my marker out in November for a weekend scenario. I found that it wasn't leaking, but it was chopping shots and blowing through air quickly. The shots were inconsistent and any mode aside from semi-auto was producing lobbed balls after a short burst of rounds. I contacted Tippmann and told them that it's time to replace the marker. They were glad to help and sent me a refurbished Phenom.
I've taken my refurb out a couple times now and it has had no issues with air or lobbing / chopping balls. The shots are a little inconsistent as far as aim goes when compared to previous Tippmann markers I've owned or used, but this could just be from the cold weather. I will know for sure once I get it out this spring and summer. Either way, I'm happy to have this marker again and all the positives that I initially wrote about it stand true.
Tippmann has been INCREDIBLE through the process. I have never had to send in anything for replacement before, and despite my constant contact with them over this marker, they have been incredible. They are incredibly quick and helpful. Every time I sent in my marker, they would send me back some gifts for my trouble. I was even sent a "prototype" trigger for the Phenom. It ended up just being a regular trigger that was black, but I still appreciated it since the bright silver stock trigger is a rather odd choice.
My review is staying at 4 stars.

Excellent Buy!! Apr 28, 2010
By Hades This marker definitely lives up to its name! Rarely does a player come across a marker that is so complete (yet customizable,) easy to maintain and operate, and a blast to use. When I received the marker the first thing that I noticed was the small and compact box the marker arrived in. After experiencing this marker for almost a week, the expression "good things come in small packages" comes to mind. Despite its small size the Phenom's box commands attention and provides a wealth of information about the marker contained inside. The foam inside is cut out perfectly and will keep the marker well protected in-between use.
Now onto the marker:
The Tippmann X-7 Phenom marker is lighter, shorter, and comes with a longer barrel than the X-7 marker. Another major difference is the Phenom is an electro-pneumatic marker that uses an open bolt blow forward spool valve system. The spool valve design eliminates recoil; therefore less aim adjustment between each shoot is required. This is especially important in making sure every shot counts when the marker is firing at 15 bps.
The low profile hopper still holds 200 paintballs but sits lower than previous cyclone hoppers. The hopper did require a fair amount of force to install and remove, but I had no worries that the lid would stay closed and not unexpectedly pop open. The cyclone feed paddles have been improved to not break paintballs while easily keeping up with full auto fire rate (no batteries necessary).
Adjusting the velocity on this marker has changed from previous Tippmann markers. Instead of twisting a screw left and right, adjustments are made by turning the adjustor upwards and downwards. Players still have the option of using CO2, compressed air, or nitrogen with this marker. Also a remote line, which is my preferred method, can be connected and used. For those who wish to do so, air thru stock systems can still be attached.
I am thrilled that the stock Phenom comes with only top and bottom picantinny rails. Having picantinny rails on each side of the X-7 marker made it uncomfortable to hold under the stock shroud. The picantinny rails that are included can be used to attach any number of accessories. I always appreciate sling mounts and this marker does not disappoint in that option.
The internal gasline is a dream that has come true. Since my I first purchased a Tippmann marker my biggest cosmetic complaint was that the gasline was exposed. The Phenom cleverly uses the space within the hand grip to hide the gasline, while also encloses the electronic board and battery. The three position selector switch makes this marker easily switched between the safe position, manual trigger pull, and the electronically controlled firing modes. The marker is pre-programmed with five different firing modes. Three round burst, full auto, auto response, turbo mode, and semi auto are the different options a player can select. With the help of the manual, switching between each mode and understanding each firing mode is simple. The manual also covers how to fine tune each firing mode in the advanced programming section. Players that follow this guide will see how easily the setting can be adjusted. Also helpful is the marker's low battery feature. "As the battery loses power, the LED stops flashes green, and changes to flashing red." Players no longer have to guess if their marker's battery is going to die in the middle of play. If this does happen, a player can easily move the selector switch to the manual fire mode and continue to manually fire the marker. This option is not available with most electronic markers. Just as easy is the ability for a player to switch the battery. The battery door pops out of the back of the grip and the battery can be accessed and replaced.
As always, Tippmann generously includes tools, supplies, and barrel blocks, most of which fit into the magazine clip of the marker. With this marker, the quick-release tools storage magazine fits snuggly and releases smoothly from its holder. I comfortably use the feature as a front grip. This marker is also one of the easiest markers to maintain. Just pop open the back, remove a few parts, and oil. Just as easy is the process to return the parts when maintenance is complete.
One last thing, this marker is a Tippmann so that means this marker is built to last. When push comes to shove, I would take this marker over any other electro-marker and not have to worry about breaking anything. This marker is definitely not going to break down on game day spoiling all the fun.
Overall, I love this marker. Full auto capability, no visible gasline, easy maintenance, no recoil, sling mounts, and durability are all favorite features of this marker.

Now I like paintball even more!!! Jun 22, 2011
By Jose Luis Padilla Diaz Ok this isn't your usual marker. This bad boy, although its a little more heavier than other markers, has a remarcable firing rate, paintballs don't break easy inside the barrel( I used up 3000 paintballs in one day and it didn't break a single one), anf it has many, many, many modifications you can add(AK-47, Sidewinder Sniper, M-16, MP5, X-36, ETC.) The price is perfect for a gun like this one and is one of the most realistic looking markers out there without the additional mods you can purchase. Finally, what I love most about buying this marker, its a TIPPMANN marker, you get the 2 year warranty. Overall, an awsome buy, awsome marker. You are not going to see or play paintball the same again.

X7 Phenom, electro-mechanical Apr 11, 2011
By Duke012 What can I say? The X7 Phenom is the mother of the woodsball guns. I used it just today and I have no words to explain the performance, no chops, not even 1 ball break in the barrel (and I shoot like 2000 balls). I used it in full auto for a while and shoot like 250 balls in a matter of minutes, so you may want to change it to manual sometimes jeje.
The barrel of this gun it's nice. You may want to buy a larger and better one, but overall the one that includes the package do the job in a great way.
The cyclone feeder it's simply awesome, no gas leaks, the toggle to change modes is smooth, if you do not have a grip you can use the mag, good range to shoot...
I definitely recommend this marker to anyone who wants a quality, accurate and durable marker... ask anyone who owns a Phenom (or a Tippmann).
A+++++++
